RAW - A Hardcore Game for Casual Gamers

The Idea

RAW is a running-on-rails action platformer for Android, OUYA, Desktop (PC,Mac, and Linux), and (hopefully!) iOS. RAW is the name of our hero, a cyborg with incredible strength. The story starts with RAW's first moments and follows his adventure to find out who, what, where, and why he is. Nav-Bot, a small, flying robot, guides him along his journey offering companionship and comic relief.

The Gameplay

RAW must keep running to keep his power supply charged. As he smashes through enemies, he earns energy that makes him run faster. If RAW maxes out his energy, he may activate RAWesomeness mode, a short power-up that makes him incredibly fast and completely unstoppable. RAW's three basic moves are jump, dash, and shoot. These moves allow him to jump over, dash through, or just blow up anything in his way. This control scheme is simple enough to work on a smartphone, yet provides gameplay deep enough to be fun and interesting even on desktop. Playing RAW is like playing an old Sonic game with the right button stuck down. That is, if Sonic had a cannon for one arm and a chainsaw for the other.

The Art

The art style for RAW is a pixel-based graphic novel - we're going for dynamic fights, memorable characters, and over-the-top action. We will also be using this graphic novel to tell the story of RAW; a newborn cyborg as he searches for his purpose in life, along with his mouthy side-kick, NavBot, tries to guide him through a host of robots, mind-controlled villagers, and deadly pitfalls along the journey.

The RAWdio Contest

We recently hosted a submission contest so that other musicians would have an opportunity to be a part of the project. The contest went amazingly well and we have more audio than we need! During the final weeks of our Kickstarter we would like YOU to help craft the game by voicing your opinions on the music and sound effects by voting on them through the Detour Games Facebook page.

You can listen to all of the submitted audio here.
